Purple Heart Forever StampThe purple heart stamp, which honors service men and women who were wounded, was in jeopardy of being retired with the new recent rate change.
But, the Postmaster General announced the stamp would continue on at the current first class rate. Senator Hillary Clinton had introduced legislation to make the stamp a permanent “forever stamp.”
She said the decision to continue printing the Purple Heart stamp is “the right thing to do in honor of our veterans and those who have been lost in service to their country.” The senator said she would still push to make the stamp a permanent one.
The stamp was first unveiled at ceremonies in Washington and Newburgh, at Washington’s Headquarters, in May 2003. It was in Newburgh that General George Washington first awarded the predecessor award to the Purple Heart, the Badge of Military Merit.
